FEELING A WAR WAS ON
The church tower was 80 feet high and from the top could be seen 30 other church spires or towers. This was why I suppose the Army were more or less inhabiting it, in and out I remember seeing the soldiers at the church door when I went to and fro from school. I was so amazed when these daring young men would be on the very edge of the tower dangling their legs in between the arches from the very dangerous angles, with my timid mind I regarded them as wonderful, especially as before that soldiers had never been mentioned before in our family. But now they were so much, now that the girls of the village ended by marrying them. Even my sister was one who did, not so very long after. They couldn’t have a real wedding cake I remember, but my sister Hylda made a lovely show of one made with sweets. I thought how clever she was. We were so proud of her because she had worked in a real English castle among very rich people who owned most of the land for miles. We knew him as the squire. Click for Chapter |
